“With the Audi A6 Avant E-tron Concept, we are offering a completely tangible look at future production models on our new PPE technology platform,” said Oliver Hoffmann, board member for technical development at Audi, in a press release.
“We’re not just electrifying the Avant’s successful 45-year history. What we want most of all is to use technical skill to add an exclamation point. In particular, this includes powerful 800-volt technology, 270 kilowatts (kW) of charging capacity, and a WLTP range of up to 700 kilometers (435 miles).”
In order to measure an electric vehicle’s range, automakers around the world created three forms for measurement:New European Driving Cycle (NEDC), Worldwide Harmonised Light Vehicle Test Procedure (WLTP), and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) test. The NEDC and WLTP are both European standards, while the EPA test is for the U.S. Estimates may vary in conversion.
PPE is the first platform designed to accommodate a range of high-volume automobiles like SUVs and crossovers with high ground clearance, along with cars that have low ride height, as a part of Audi’s core product range.
In the future, the strongest representatives of the series could jump from 0-60 mph in less than 4 seconds.
Avant, derived from “avant garde” and a 1995 Audi ad slogan, borrows its dimensions from the A6 Sportback E-tron. There have been Avant models in the series since 1977, all used to describe vehicles featured in the station wagon class.
This reinterpreted wagon is 16.3-feet long, 6.4-feet wide and 4.7-feet high, slightly larger than America’s best-selling wagon – the Subaru Outback – which is 15.9-feet long, 6.2-feet wide and 5.5-feet high.
Avant looks identical to the E-tron A6 up to the C-pillar, but with a taller and longer wagon roof .
From the front, the Audi A6 E-tron concept showcases the brand’s iconic four-ring branding. It has flat headlight bezels that extend far into the sides of the sweeping front end similar to the Sportback. There are OLED taillights that stretch the entire width of the rear of the vehicle and are very similar to those of the sedan, as is the rear bumper.
The Audi A6 E-tron Sportback and Avant concept cars are now the first members of a family of vehicles. The first Audi production vehicles built on the PPE platform will be successively unveiled starting in 2023.
Audi has not officially announced whether the Avant will reach U.S. soil, however, in an email to Newsweek said: “The Audi A6 Avant E-tron concept will be followed by the production model in 2024. Until then, Audi is going to evaluate the request by potential customers for both versions, Sportback and Avant. According to the results, we will decide on the schedule for the global market introduction. So far, we see good chances for both versions in our biggest export markets.”
