The hashtag #AviciiForever was trending on the social media platform early Monday morning, as fans shared remembrances and messages of appreciation. “Two years without my favorite DJ,” one user wrote. “Always in my heart legend. #AviciiForever”

Avicii, whose real name was Tim Bergling, died by suicide at the age of 28 on April 20, 2018, in Muscat, Oman. He rose to fame in the music industry amid the EDM boom of the early 2010s, thanks to the strength of his 2011 single “Levels” and his 2013 debut album, True. He also earned a Grammy nomination in 2012 for “Sunshine,” a collaborative track he did with the French DJ David Guetta. Avicii released a second album, Stories, in 2015; a third LP, 2019’s Tim, was released posthumously and featured tracks that Avicii was working on during the final months of his life.

During his music career, Avicii struggled with his health. Partially because of alcohol abuse, the electronic musician suffered from acute pancreatitis. He also underwent operations in 2014 to have his gallbladder and appendix removed, per Consequence of Sound.

In 2018, soon after Avicii’s death, Mike Einziger, the guitarist for rock band Incubus, spoke with Rolling Stone about how Avicii had stopped touring to focus on his sobriety. “The lifestyle he was living, everywhere he went was this massive party,” Einziger said. “But he seemed like he was achieving the balance he was trying to attain.”

A year after Avicii’s death, his family announced the founding of the Tim Bergling Foundation, a charity intended to support groups that focus on mental health and suicide prevention, according to The New York Times.
