Busch finished 42nd at Pocono with a blown engine, and wound up 40th at Watkins Glen after a pit-road mistake followed by an early wreck.

Busch, who has just one win this season (at California in April), had fallen from sixth to 15th in the standings in the past three weeks.

Busch had three runnerup finishes in his last six races entering Michigan, but also had finishes of 28th, 42nd and 40th.

After repairs, Busch returned to the track on Lap 29 but was 25 laps down. He finished 39th.
