TikTok user @bakemydaymimo posted a viral video that has amassed nearly 10 million views where she said she needed to bake a new cake upon realizing the filling in the already-frosted cake was not dyed. Viewers had a chance to watch and comment on the other videos that explained why @bakemydaymimo had to start over, what she did with the original cake that she prepared, and what the final cake looked like.
Families sometimes choose to hold a gender reveal party as a way to share the baby’s sex with relatives and friends. The different ways families announce the sex of the baby have evolved over the years. Some announcements have been simple while others appear more extravagant.
@bakemydaymimo showed viewers an undecorated cake covered in blue frosting as she asked if they could tell what was wrong with it.
“It’s a gender reveal cake,” she says in one clip. “There’s no gender reveal inside the cake. I forgot to make the filling as the gender.”
The baker says she even set a reminder on her phone to dye the filling for the cake.
Taking some deep breaths, @bakemydaymimo assures herself that it was a “simple cake” and had a few hours to make a new one for the client.
“I can’t take it apart, I can’t,” she says, referring to the original cake. “I’ll just figure something out with this one and sell it.”
In the next part of her gender reveal cake saga, @bakemydaymimo showed a newly baked cake out of the oven. Although one commenter suggested that she put white fondant over the blue frosting @bakemydaymimo said the blue frosting is part of the design and the cake needed pink or blue filling.
“The cream in between the layers has to be the gender color,” she explains in the video’s voiceover.
In addition to re-making the gender reveal cake, @bakemydaymimo also took the time to decorate the original cake. A separate video showed how she decorated it, which featured sprinkles, rosettes and edible seashells.
@bakemydaymimo managed to complete the new cake before the client picked it up, and shared what the final product looked like.
A cake with blue frosting and pink drips was adorned with rosettes and macarons, topped with a small sign that read “Oh baby.”
@bakemydaymimo responded to a commenter who asked her about the client’s reaction to learning she had to make a new cake and said she laughed about it.
However, viewers were told they had to wait until after the client’s party to learn what color the filling was that symbolized the sex of the baby.
An article published by BabyCenter discussed different ideas families can consider if they plan to hold a gender reveal party, urging people to choose to celebrate safely.
According to the outlet, cutting in a cake is an easy and popular way to learn the sex of the baby.
“Many bakeries will make special gender reveal cakes or cupcakes for their customers, or you can make your own with some colored filling at home,” the article read.
Sometimes, a gender reveal party can go wrong and turn into a dangerous event. Newsweek previously reported that by April 2021, four people were killed as a result of these events. At one such party, a stunt reportedly led to the deaths of two pilots who crashed while performing tricks, according to TMZ.
Commenters under @bakemydaymimo were invested in her journey to complete the cake.
When @bakemydaymimo shared what the finished cake looked like, many applauded how it turned out.
“Why is it sooo beautiful,” @yara_yaryour commented.
“You did it and it turned out gorgeous,” wrote @ranboomybeloved99.
Others were surprised that the baker called it a simple cake when they saw what it looked like.
“Makes a masterpiece and calls it simple?!” @bh9463 wrote. “Damn.”
