According to the Cats Fanciers’ Association, the hairless Sphynx was the 10th-most popular cat breed of 2021.
Sphynx cats came in to being in the 1960s as a result as a genetic mutation, according to the CFA. It said that in 1966, a domestic cat gave birth to a hairless kitten in Toronto, Canada.
“It was discovered to be a natural genetic mutation and the Sphynx cat, as we know it today, came into existence,” according to the CFA.
Despite their slightly fragile appearance, the CFA argues that the cats are “not fragile in any way. Sphynx have sturdy boning, good muscle development and a bit of a firm belly as if they just finished a nice dinner.”
Unlike the classic cat stereotypes, Sphynx cats are known to be very affectionate, attention-seeking and vocal.
Is Coconut Oil Good for Sphynx Cats?
“The hairlessness of Sphynx cats does not mean that they’re less work than cats with fur,” according to PetMD. “On the contrary, a lot goes into keeping these cats well-groomed and their skin healthy.”
Speaking on PetMD, Kristen Kranz, founder and executive director of Wisconsin-based Specialty Purebred Cat Rescue, said maintaining a healthy diet is essential when looking after the skin of a Sphynx cat.
“You want a high-quality food, because food affects the amount of oil that a Sphynx’s skin produces,” she said. “The better the food, the less oil. If you don’t feed them a high-quality diet, oils accumulate more quickly and can lead to not just ongoing skin problems but also issues with ear wax and infections.”
Due to their lack of fur and high-maintenance skin, Sphynx cats can often get oil on furniture and clothes, so it’s best to invest in some throws.
The ingredients and products used on Sphynx skin are important, and some ingredients suitable for humans or other cats might be too harsh for their skin. Pets4Homes suggests products specifically designed for the breed, including shampoos and soaps, but coconut oil is also a good thing to stock up on as it helps to moisturize the skin while loosening dirt.
