Injured early in the second quarter Saturday against TCU, Mayfield returned to the game but was removed after halftime as a precaution, according to sources close to the program cited by NewsOK.com.

He passed tests given to him during Saturday’s first half, at halftime and again Sunday.

To avoid any appearance that he is interfering, Sooners coach Bob Stoops says he purposefully keeps a distance between himself and the concussion testing protocol. He said as much again after Saturday’s victory.

“I’m not part of the whole testing situation and everything they do,” Stoops said. “I know our doctors are incredibly thorough and always err on the safe side.”

In leading Oklahoma (10-1, 7-1 in the Big 12) to a six-game winning streak and into College Football Playoffs contention, Mayfield has completed 68.7 percent of his passes for 3,209 yards, 33 touchdowns and only five interceptions. A victory Saturday would clinch the Big 12 championship.
