The six-year NFL veteran was charged with possession of less than 28 grams of marijuana or 10 grams of hash; driving with an open container of alcohol; driving without a license; and resisting arrest. He was held at the York County Jail.
On Wednesday, Breeland explained the circumstances of his arrest, saying the drugs for which he was charged did not belong to him. In since-deleted tweets, he said two men approached his car at the gas station and, when police pulled up, they threw “something” in his car and he was the one who was detained.
Per his tweets:
That doesn’t quite match a York County sheriff’s deputy’s recollection of Breeland’s arrest, however. TMZ Sports, citing the deputy, reported Wednesday that Breeland and two other men were smoking marijuana at a gas station at 11 a.m. ET on Tuesday. The deputy then said the men tried to hide the marijuana when he arrived, and that Breeland attempted to leave the scene.
I’m not fighting to clear a name I don’t care wat people think I know the truth innocent until proven guilty
At that point, the deputy said, the arresting officer pulled a taser gun and directed Breeland to stop resisting, to which he would not comply. The officer then drew his firearm and continued directing him in “more lawful commands.” When the officer eventually detained Breeland, officers reportedly searched his car and found “a large marijuana blunt,” 3.2 grams of marijuana and open bottles of beer and tequila.
Breeland is coming off a season with the Super Bowl champion Chiefs in which he started 15 games and played in every postseason game. He pulled down three interceptions — including one in the Super Bowl — and returned two fumbles for Kansas City, tallying 66 tackles on the season. He signed a one-year, $4.5 million deal in early April.
