A clip of this exchange has gone viral for reasons that become obvious after you watch.
The announcing duo is Lee Bernick and George Nusbaum, and they were calling the Nov. 30, 2019 game between Prior Lake and East Ridge in Minnesota. The clip above is short, so the context is a little confusing. But a longer version of the exchange makes things a little more understandable.
The reason the two were talking about death in the first place when the announcers mentioned the mother of one of the players, Craig Johnson, had passed away. So while already talking about someone who was “gone, but not forgotten,” Bernick transitioned to his dog, Lucy.
We know it’s his dog because he confirmed so on Twitter.
As Bernick started talking about his dog being “run over in our driveway,” Nusbaum interjected by reacting to the play yelling, “Oh, yes!” But instead of apologizing for his tone, Nusbaum doubled down by saying, “Like that? Was she run over like that?” referring to the dunk that had occurred on the court.
After that comment, Nusbaum did have a more emotional response.
“And yes, our hearts and minds are with your sweet Lucy, in dog heaven.”
The full exchange can be watched below.
So even though in the short clip the comment seems highly inappropriate, these two announcers clearly have chemistry and, presumably, no feelings were hurt.
