Boateng, 29, is recognised amongst the world’s elite defenders for his work with the Bavarians and in the Germany national team.

Germany 5/1 to retain World Cup

Among his career highlights are a World Cup winners medal, a Champions League crown and five consecutive Bundesliga titles with Die Roten.

When pressed on his defensive idols, however, Boateng turned to two Spanish stars.

“Sergio Ramos is not only one of the best because of his many successes, he also scores important goals offensively,” he told Sport Bild.

“Spain also have Gerard Pique and Diego Godin is great, has a great reputation and holds the rear of Atletico and Uruguay.

“For the Italians, Giorgio Chiellini and Leonardo Bonucci are world-class, and in France, I like Samuel Umtiti very well, and there are actually a lot of center-backs at the highest level.”
