Thibaut Courtois’ penalty-kick save and a Michy Batshuayi goal helped Belgium beat Canada in their opener, but the Red Devils were on their heels for the entire match. Even Belgium manager Roberto Martinez admitted that the Canadians were the better side.
However, the three points put Belgium in strong position to advance with matches against Morocco and then Croatia to come.
But then things really fell apart. First, Morocco turned in a superb performance to win 2-0, and then, with a victory needed, Belgium squandered a host of chances to draw 0-0 with Croatia and drop out of the tournament.

Belgium 2022 World Cup schedule
After defeating Canada 1-0, Belgium faced Morocco in a game they were expected to win.
The Moroccans stifled Croatia in a 0-0 opening match deadlock, and with a little bit of luck might have walked away with all three points.
A win would have clinched a spot in the Round of 16 for Belgium, but as it was they were outplayed — going down 2-0 with a loss that meant they were sweating it out on the final matchday against 2018 World Cup finalists Croatia.
They had chances, too, but in the end they simply could not break Croatia down as a 0-0 draw consigned them to the exit, and ultimately saw Roberto Martinez walk away from his job.
