I’m not that religious, but our baby is having a Roman Catholic baptism. We’re friends with a very loving couple who are not Catholic. Can we ask them to be our baby’s godparents? At a Catholic baptism, at least one godparent must be a baptized, confirmed and practicing Catholic. You can have one godparent or two. If there are two, one must be a man, the other a woman; both must be older than 16. Once you choose a Catholic godparent, you can ask one of your friends to be the other. Just one catch: he or she must be a baptized Christian. The formal title for this is “Christian witness.”

I’d like to wish my Jewish boss a “blessed” Rosh Hashana, but I’m not sure if that’s the appropriate way to say it. Should I say, “Have a nice Rosh Hashana,” or what? “Happy Rosh Hashana” or “Have a blessed Rosh Hashana” will do the trick. (Just make sure he or she actually celebrates it.)

I frequently receive forwarded e-mails that ask me to pass them along “if you love the Lord.” The implication is that a good person would send the e-mail on. What should I do? God won’t smite you for hitting DELETE. In fact, you’re probably showing more compassion by doing so. Unscrupulous types compile lists of e-mail addresses found on such messages, and forwarded e-mails can contain viruses. Besides, no one needs a virtual guilt trip.

Sub-for-Santa, a nonprofit organization I work with, donates gifts to families in need every December. This year we’re “adopting” a Jehovah’s Witness family. I know Jehovah’s Witnesses don’t celebrate holidays, but is it OK to wrap the gifts we purchased in a nonholiday wrapping paper? The problem here is not the wrapping paper but the day prompting the gift, since Jehovah’s Witnesses consider Christmas to be a pagan holiday. J. R. Brown at the Jehovah’s Witnesses Office of Public Information suggests not doing anything the week of Christmas itself. Also, you might consider providing a service for the family rather than giving a gift. That way, you’d show that you care, but your gift might not be seen as a Christmas present.
