There was no Triple Crown on the line this year after Nyquist won the Kentucky Derby, then finished third behind Exaggerator in the Preakness. Nyquist withdrew from the Belmont because of a high white blood cell count and a fever.

The Belmont is a 1 1/2-mile race over dirt for 3-year-olds at Belmont Park in Elmont, N.Y., held on the second Saturday of June each year. It’s the third and final Triple Crown race — also the longest and most challenging, which is why so many hopefuls have fallen short . The Belmont Stakes is nicknamed “The Test of the Champion” for a reason.
