And as best friends are wont to do, they made a friendly wager on a competition. Not on the game, of course, but when they face each other at the plate. From the Post-Dispatch:
Neither guy is much of a hitter. Miller has a career .132 average and Kelly’s at .154.
Miller got the first crack at the plate, and Kelly walked him on four pitches in the bottom of the second inning.
Then Kelly led off the top of the third with a soft chopper just over Miller’s head. Shortstop Jhonny Peralta charged, fielded and threw and first-base ump Gary Cederstrom called Kelly out. Before Brock Holt stepped to the plate, though, the Red Sox had time to look at the replay, and manager John Farrell came striding out of the dugout.
