During a press briefing on Thursday, Biden was asked by CNN’s MJ Lee about how badly Putin is being informed by his Russian advisers.
“There’s a lot of speculation, but he seems to be—I’m not saying this with a certainty—he seems to be self-isolating, and there’s some indication that he has fired or put under house arrest some of his advisers,” Biden said after he spoke about steps to decrease U.S. energy prices.
No details were revealed regarding evidence that Putin mistrusts his military leadership.
“But I don’t want to put too much stock in that at this time because we don’t have that much hard evidence,” he added.
On Wednesday, U.S. intelligence officials said that Putin’s advisers are misleading him about the military and providing him with misinformation concerning the war, which has been going for more than a month.
White House Communications Director Kate Bedingfield said on Wednesday during a press briefing that Putin “felt misled by the Russian military, which has resulted in persistent tension between Putin and his military leadership.”
“We believe that Putin is being misinformed by his advisors about how badly the Russian military is performing and how the Russian economy is being crippled by sanctions because his senior advisors are too afraid to tell him the truth,” Bedingfield said.
“So it is increasingly clear that Putin’s war has been a strategic blunder that has left Russia weaker over the long term and increasingly isolated on the world stage,” she added.
Russian forces have been finding it difficult to move forward in Ukraine amid supply shortages, morale problems, and limited directions from officials in the Russian military.
A U.S. intelligence official who spoke on the condition of anonymity said that Putin began facing trust issues with his leadership after he felt that he was being misled about the military situation in Ukraine, according to Reuters.
The Russian president also didn’t know his troops were using and losing conscripted soldiers in the war, which shows a “clear breakdown in the flow of accurate information to the Russian president,” according to the official who cited previously classified information.
A conscripted soldier is a person who is forced to enroll in the army for a country’s military service.
NATO estimated that between 7,000 and 15,000 Russian soldiers have died since the beginning of the Russian invasion in February 24. The Russian Military of Defense estimated that number to be 1,351 service members who have died, and Ukrainian officials said that more than 17,000 Russian soldiers have died.
Newsweek reached out to the White House and the Russian Defense Ministry and Foreign Affairs Ministry for comment.
