The ceremony was hosted by actor and comedian Wayne Brady, who took time out of rehearsing for the Dancing With the Stars 2022 finale to oversee the event.
Plenty of stars were in attendance, with Kelly Rowland, Ellie Goulding, Smokey Robinson and Charlie Puth all hitting the red carpet, as well as Lionel Richie who was the recipient of the Icon Award on the evening.
Inside the award show, Bebe Rexha, Imagine Dragons, GloRilla and Cardi B, Carrie Underwood and Pink were among the performers who took to the stage, while Richie, Puth and Stevie Wonder joined forces for a medley of Richie’s greatest hits.
Taylor Swift, who recently released her tenth studio album, Midnights, had a historic evening as she became the first artist to win 40 American Music Awards. She took home six awards (winning in all categories she was nominated for), including Favorite Female Pop Artist and Favorite Pop Album.
The artist after Swift with the most American Music Awards is Michael Jackson, who has 26 wins, while Whitney Houston has 22 wins to her name.
While Swift enjoyed huge success, many fans on social media stated that The Weeknd, who was nominated for Favorite Male R&B Artist and Favorite R&B Album or Dawn FM had been “robbed.”
The musician and Idol star, real name Abel Tesfaye, was nominated for five awards but was not successful in any of the categories.
