As this dramatic change of power unfolds in Washington, Yemen’s internationally recognized government is hoping that two potentially impactful signs of a change of course by the Biden administration were premature. Prominent among concerns expressed by Secretary of State Antony Blinken during his premier press conference on Wednesday was the designation of rebel movement Ansar Allah, or the Houthis, as a foreign terrorist organization by his predecessor, Mike Pompeo....

It cited concerns that the policies could amount to discrimination against students with disabilities or health conditions. “It’s simply unacceptable that state leaders are putting politics over the health and education of the students they took an oath to serve,” Education Secretary Miguel Cardona said in a statement. “The department will fight to protect every student’s right to access in-person learning safely.” For more reporting from the Associated Press, see below....

According to the poll, the two are split at 47 percent, while 3 percent chose Libertarian candidate Jo Jorgensen and 3 percent said they are undecided. The poll, which was conducted by Monmouth University, surveyed 402 registered voters across Georgia from July 23 to July 27. The poll has a margin of error of plus or minus 4.9 percentage points. The poll also shows two separate models based on the level of voter turnout, based on the voter turnout during the 2016 presidential election....

Joined by Vice President Kamala Harris, Biden pressed for the need to change the filibuster rules in order to make it easier to pass the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act and the Freedom to Vote Act, but not all members of his party support such a move. Senators Kyrsten Sinema and Joe Manchin have both publicly stated they are opposed to changing the Senate’s current 60-vote threshold. In order to alter filibuster rules, Democrats would need not only Sinema and Manchin to be on board, but also the vote of every Democratic party member in the Senate, which is split evenly 50–50 between Democrats and Republicans....

Progressive Democratic lawmakers—such as Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ihan Omar of Minnesota and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan—initially endorsed Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont over Biden in the Democratic primaries. However, after Biden won the nomination, they rallied behind him and urged their supporters to back his campaign. But as Biden inched toward victory in the Electoral College last week, some moderates and Republican supporters of Biden urged the president-elect to govern from the center....

Erie County, where Buffalo is located, was hit with 43 inches of snow over Christmas weekend. The storm caused widespread power outages and made roads impassable, leading to many vehicles becoming stranded. Much of the nation has been battered by an arctic blast in recent days, and out of at least 49 deaths in the U.S., more than half occurred in the Buffalo area, according to the Associated Press....

The poll from by Public Policy Polling surveyed 818 registered voters on July 7-8, and shows 50 percent of them favoring Biden and 46 percent supporting Trump. About 5 percent were unsure. The same polling data shows that 93 percent of the voters who cast ballots for Democratic nominee Hilary Clinton in 2016 would vote for Biden, while 91 percent of those who backed for Trump four years ago said they were supporting the president again in 2020....

The White House on Friday announced that Rikelman’s nomination will be included among eight of Biden’s judicial picks. Rikelman represented the Mississippi clinic that was at the center of the Supreme Court’s bombshell opinion nullifying national abortion rights. The nomination follows the unraveling of a reported deal by Biden to appoint a conservative jurist to federal judiciary, a move which stirred up the president’s base. Rikelman, currently the litigation director for the Center for Reproductive Rights where she has worked since 2011, was nominated for the Boston-based First Circuit Court of Appeals....

White House Press Secretary Jen Psaki revealed a summary of the approach to reporters Friday as she confirmed a months-long “thorough, rigorous and inclusive” policy review regarding North Korea, officially the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea, had been completed. “Our goal remains the complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula, with the clear understanding that the efforts of the past four administrations have not achieved this objective,” Psaki said. She said Washington would continue to pursue diplomatic overtures to Pyongyang while tempering expectations of what that meant in line with U....

As a public health measure, Biden’s orders may be salutary. But they stand on shaky legal ground. Historically, vaccine mandates have been imposed—if at all—by state governments, and not by the federal government.
