The latest package for Ukraine includes artillery and coastal defense weapons, ammunition, and advanced rocket systems, according to a statement from the White House. The humanitarian funds are intended to help provide Ukrainians with safe drinking water, medical supplies, food and shelter. The statement noted some of the humanitarian assistance for Ukraine will be in the form of “cash for families to purchase essential items.” Multiple Ukrainian officials, including President Volodymyr Zelensky, have made pleas to the international community to send more weapons and financial aid to help the country defend itself from Russian President Vladimir Putin’s military forces....

Newsom, who runs a state that is 40 percent Latino and 15 percent Asian, has long been pro-immigrant. California announced in February that it was providing up to $28 million to help arriving asylum seekers, including footing the bill for hotel rooms for COVID-quarantine efforts, food and transportation. But as the White House has faced criticism over the pace of migration and the quality of the conditions for arriving children in detention, California Democrats worry a worsening situation at the border in the coming months could add to Newsom’s political challenges....

The Gender Policy Council, co-chaired by Executive Director Jen Klein and Julissa Reynoso, First Lady Jill Biden’s chief of staff, will urge the agencies to address the potential negative effect that their actions have on women from all walks of life, McClatchy’s D.C. bureau reported. Women leaders in the White House have been sought out for their knowledge and expertise for the council. Biden has requested that the council coordinate the government’s response to a number of problems that affect women, like sexual harassment, gender-based violence, wage and wealth gaps, health disparities and reproductive health rights....

South Carolina has been touted as a better test for the Democratic nominee than the other two states. It has a more racially diverse populace than the lily white voters in Iowa and New Hampshire, one that more closely mimics the average Democratic primary voter. But in another way, South Carolina is a very odd state to serve a decisive battleground. Unlike Iowa and New Hampshire (or the fourth state, Nevada) there is almost no chance that Biden or any other Democrat will triumph in South Carolina in the general election....

In the past two years, they have butchered hundreds of elephants around Zakouma, say Chadian authorities, carrying the tusks back to Sudan, where they are secreted on ships bound mostly for Asia—or traded for weapons....

John Wilner reports “USC and UCLA are planning to leave for the Big Ten as early as 2024.” The move has not been finalized, but that would be the next major shakeup in the conference realignment game and all indications are the deal is done. USC has been with the Pac-12 since 1880 and is the conference’s most-recognizable football brand. UCLA joined the Pac-12 in 1919 and is the conference’s most-recognizable basketball brand....

According to data from NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) the asteroid, known as 1998 OR2, is the largest to make a close approach to Earth in the next year, measuring somewhere between 1.1 and 2.5 miles in diameter. On Wednesday April 29 at 5:56 a.m. ET, the asteroid will come within around 3.9 million miles of our planet—roughly 16 times the average distance between the Earth and Moon—while travelling at a speed of 19,461 miles per hour....

Tapper began by asking Clinton about Attorney General William Barr’s position that gun control legislation cannot be moved while the impeachment process is underway. “My answer is look at how much we got done in 1998 and 1999.
